History
The Historic Star Theatre first opened its doors on June 6, 1947, under the ownership of Richard and Winfred Beasley. Located in downtown Stuart, the theatre was a beacon of modern entertainment, boasting 372 seats, a sloped floor, and one of the town's first air-conditioned interiors. It quickly became a hub for the community, offering feature films, live music performances, and stage shows. Local lore suggests that country music legends such as Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs, and possibly Hank Williams graced its stage. The theatre operated alongside other local venues, including the Stuart Theatre and two drive-ins, enriching the cultural landscape of Patrick County in the mid-20th century. All four theatres had closed by the 1960s, but the Star Theatre found a revival forty years later.
In the early 2000s, Patrick County native, Tommy Beasley, led a "monumental restoration" project that included a complete rebuild, preserving only the original exterior walls. Diverse, high-quality offerings at the theatre continued regularly for several years and the theatre transitioned to serving the community as a church when Beasley retired.
In 2021, the Town of Stuart received a historic designation for its depot area between Patrick Avenue and South Main Street, with the Historic Star Theatre nestled directly in the center of that zone. The town partnered with local non-profit organization One Family Productions to shepherd the Star into its next chapter after the town purchased the venue as an investment in the community.
In 2024, One Family Productions re-opened the historic theatre as a versatile venue hosting performances, workshops, and community events that embody the organization’s mission to celebrate the arts and enrich the local heritage.
